The Jets have found another way to win. On Tuesday night, it was a reliance on five shot blocks by defenceman Luke Schenn - including two in the final three minutes.

The newcomer, who was skating in his first game as a member of the Jets, threw five hits, made five blocks, earned one takeaway, one shot on goal and maintained his reputation as one of the best defensive defencemen in the league over his 16-some-odd minutes of play.

"A big one," head coach Scott Arniel said of Schenn's strong play. "Ran into some people. Couple big shot blocks. Keeps the game simple... like we talked about yesterday. Makes a good first pass. Recognizes what's ahead of him. I'm sure there was lots of nerves coming in here. First game, against a team like the Rangers, that was a real good first showing."

Winnipeg improved to 45-17-4 on the year and owns a league-best 94 points, which is two ahead of Washington and eight ahead of the Dallas Stars who sit second in the Central Division.

The game wasn't a stereotypical Jets home contest either, but the team managed to win for the 24th time at home in 33 tries this season, despite only putting up two goals.

The Jets had solid goaltending once again, which saw the 20th game of the year from Connor Hellebuyck to which the reigning Vezina Trophy winner allowed one or fewer goals.

It was his 38th win of the season.

“Well, they’re as advertised," Schenn, the trade deadline acquisition said. "Obviously, playing them this year, it’s not by mistake that they’re in this position in the standings. The biggest thing I noticed is how much structure there is and how much detail there is on the defensive zone. Guys are in position and defending first. At the end of the day, that’s what wins in this league. They have skill, know when it’s time to take over and obviously, a great power play and goaltending. Like I said, it was pretty impressive to be a part of a group who plays the right way like this.”

Vlad Namestnikov got the party started just 5:18 in with a net-front redirection that broke a lengthy pointless streak, as he tipped home a strong zone entry from line mates Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti.

Perfetti collected his second assist on the game-winner, a power play setup to Gabe Vilardi, and in doing so set a new career high with his 40th point of the season (66 games).

"Yeah, yeah, that's pretty cool," Perfetti said. "I think that's obviously, it's not all the points, my goal this year is just been focusing on my play and the points will come. It's started to come for our line. It was nice to see our line score tonight."

Mika Zibanejad earlier had scored a power play goal of his own, which had tied the game at ones. But that score did not last long. Vilardi's 27th of the season actually proved to be the winner in the low-scoring affair.

Next up for Winnipeg is a crucial test with Dallas on Friday, in the penultimate matchup between the two clubs this season. As it stands, the Stars have two games in hand on the Jets, but sit eight points back for second in the Central Division.

That game gets underway from Canada Life Centre at 7:00 PM on Friday.

9 winners and losers from NFL free agency 2025: The Steelers are going all-in on mediocrity
The opening salvos of this year's NFL free agency period are officially behind us. Which, is actually kind of funny since free agency doesn't (officially) start until Tuesday afternoon. Though, honestly, I can't blame NFL teams for not waiting until the last minute. Early birds get the worm, you snooze and you lose ... oh, you get it.

Amanda Seyfried Leads Peacock’s Stellar Serial Killer Mystery ‘Long Bright River’: TV Review
Peacock’s “Long Bright River,” based on Liz Moore’s best-selling novel and adapted to television by Moore and Nikki Toscano, offers audiences a much more distinctive tale than the typical murder mystery. The limited series, which centers on Philadephia patrol cop Mickey Fitzpatrick (an outstanding Amanda Seyfried), is a layered narrative about two sisters, an inescapable family history and a community doomed by poverty, addiction and negligence.

Halle Berry wants women to throw menopause parties
Halle Berry wants women to celebrate the menopause by throwing a "shiesta" party. The Hollywood actress, 58, has revealed she will officially enter menopause on March 21 - the date which will mark 12 months since her last period - and she is convinced the date needs to be acknowledged like "every other milestone" in life. According to New York Post column PageSix, Halle explained her ideas during an upcoming appearance on 'The Tamsen Show' podcast, saying: "When a woman realizes that she’s in the menopause - you know, 365 days, and you know you’re in it - it is their duty to give that woman a ‘shiesta’ to celebrate her, like we do every other milestone in our life." Halle went on to confess she thought she would be able to "skip" menopause because she has spent so many years prioritising healthy living. She added: "There was a feeling of: ‘Hey, I can do pretty much anything I want to do if I eat right and exercise, and prioritize my health and well-being'. "I thought whatever menopause is - I don’t know much about it - but I’m sure I’m going to skip it, because I’m too healthy! I’m on top of everything." Halle launched her own wellness platform Respin in 2020, but she recently repurposed it to focus on menopause and women’s health issues. The actress has also been campaigning for more research into the menopause and more funding for treatments. She recently told Women's Health magazine: "As women, we've been told that's it's just what happens when you get older - you just have to white-knuckle it, grin and bear it. Well, no, that's just not good enough." Halle recently revealed she was sent into a spin after a doctor misdiagnosed her perimenopause symptoms as herpes and she then spent 72 hours with her partner Van Hunt playing the "blame game" trying to work out how she had contracted the sexually transmitted infection (STI). During an appearance on 'The Drew Barrymore Show', Halle explained: "I tried to go to the bathroom and I couldn’t go. It was so painful when I tried to let a little bit out. I couldn’t go. It took me almost 10 minutes just to empty my bladder because it was so painful. "Substances were down there that I had never seen before. And I thought, ‘What is this?’” After seeing a doctor, she was diagnosed with a "really bad case of herpes", and Halle added: "We spend the next 72 hours doing the blame game, trying to figure out who gave it to me, who gave it to him. And then a couple of hours after that, my doctor called me and said, ‘You do not have herpes'." Halle went on to do some research and discovered her symptoms were linked to perimenopause - which hits prior to menopause.

Charlie Sheen's daughter Sami 'bullied' for looking like her dad
Charlie Sheen's daughter Sami Sheen was bullied for looking like her famous father. Sami, 20, has admitted the cruel taunts about her appearance from her school mates convinced her she needed to get a nose job and she's also had to deal with comparisons to her actress mother Denise Richards. Speaking to her mom in an episode of family reality show 'Denise Richards and Her Wild Things', Sami explained: "I had to deal with kids bullying me. "People would say I looked like my dad. I actually got a comment the other day of someone saying, ‘You’ll never be as pretty as your mom'." The episode showed Denise driving her daughter to a consultation with a doctor about her planned rhinoplasty prior to the surgery in August and Sami told her mother she had wanted the operation "for as long as [I] can remember", adding: "I have this freaking honker stuck to my face". Sami also pointed to her mom's face as the example of a "perfect" nose as she explained her hope for the surgery to the doctor. Later in the episode, Denise - who is mom to Sami as well as 19-year-old Lola with her ex-husband Charlie- became tearful as she talked about her daughter's desire to go under the knife. She said: "For my daughter to want to get her nose done, it made me so sad. I feel bad that she has to live up to my nose, or whatever, because I don’t want [my daughters] to feel they have to look a certain way ... "There were times I wanted to move the kids out of LA, and I couldn’t because of where I worked. And they had two parents in this business. I feel bad." However, in a confessional, Sami wondered if she would even be considering cosmetic surgery if she wasn't living the celebrity lifestyle in Los Angeles. She said: "I'm really trying to think if we lived in, like, Alabama and I worked a normal job and I wasn't on social media. I probably would still want a nose job."
