Some residents of a small, steel-producing city in Manitoba are on edge as the U.S. is yet again poised to impose tariffs on Canadian goods — this time on aluminum and steel.

Global tariffs on exports of the metals to the U.S. are set to take effect on Wednesday after midnight.

Some people living in the city of Selkirk say the 25 per cent levies — which U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to double on Tuesday for Canada before Ontario Premier Doug Ford suspended a tax on electricity to the U.S. — could threaten jobs and heavily impact the community's economy.

The Gerdau Ameristeel Manitoba steel mill — formerly known as Manitoba Rolling Mills — was established in Selkirk in 1907 and is still a major employer for city residents.

More than 70 per cent of the steel produced in the city about 40 kilometres north of Winnipeg is shipped out to the States, the city's mayor says.

Selkirk resident Erin Rudniski said the whole trade war situation is unfair.

"Lots of people are going to lose jobs," she said Tuesday. "I have friends that work in the industry and they're afraid for their jobs. They're afraid that they won't be able to feed their families — and that's a huge concern as a Canadian."

About 1 in 20 residents in Selkirk — which has about 10,000 residents — works in the steel industry, according to the city.

The Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters said the steel mill produces about $200 million worth of steel annually.

The association's vice-president for the Prairies, Terry Shaw, said the impact will be "incredibly damaging" not only to the workers and their employer, but the town itself.

"What does it mean for the town of Selkirk and surrounding areas if hundreds of people are on work-share or laid off?," he said.

"What does that mean for the restaurant industry, the hospitality industry?… The impacts are going to be felt much beyond the manufacturer."

'Perplexing and angering'

The United Steelworkers Union represents about 7,500 members in the province.

Scott Lunny, Western Canadian director for the union, said that members are angry and frustrated, as Trump's on-again, off-again trade war clouds their future in uncertainty.

Lunny said the trade war will hurt both sides.

"It's really … perplexing and angering to folks that it's gotten to [this]," he said.

"A lot of the stuff that we ship to the U.S. from Canada goes to create manufacturing jobs in the United States already. And so if that's the goal, a trade war between Canada and the United States isn't good for building up U.S. jobs."

The mill avoided layoffs in 2018, when the first Trump administration imposed similar tariffs on steel and aluminum, the city's mayor said.

Wayne Halipchuk, who used to work at Gerdau but is now retired, said the mill has made it through "thick and thin" over the years and that he's confident nothing serious will happen.

"We've gone through this before and we survived, so …" he said.

Halle Berry wants women to throw menopause parties
Halle Berry wants women to celebrate the menopause by throwing a "shiesta" party. The Hollywood actress, 58, has revealed she will officially enter menopause on March 21 - the date which will mark 12 months since her last period - and she is convinced the date needs to be acknowledged like "every other milestone" in life. According to New York Post column PageSix, Halle explained her ideas during an upcoming appearance on 'The Tamsen Show' podcast, saying: "When a woman realizes that she’s in the menopause - you know, 365 days, and you know you’re in it - it is their duty to give that woman a ‘shiesta’ to celebrate her, like we do every other milestone in our life." Halle went on to confess she thought she would be able to "skip" menopause because she has spent so many years prioritising healthy living. She added: "There was a feeling of: ‘Hey, I can do pretty much anything I want to do if I eat right and exercise, and prioritize my health and well-being'. "I thought whatever menopause is - I don’t know much about it - but I’m sure I’m going to skip it, because I’m too healthy! I’m on top of everything." Halle launched her own wellness platform Respin in 2020, but she recently repurposed it to focus on menopause and women’s health issues. The actress has also been campaigning for more research into the menopause and more funding for treatments. She recently told Women's Health magazine: "As women, we've been told that's it's just what happens when you get older - you just have to white-knuckle it, grin and bear it. Well, no, that's just not good enough." Halle recently revealed she was sent into a spin after a doctor misdiagnosed her perimenopause symptoms as herpes and she then spent 72 hours with her partner Van Hunt playing the "blame game" trying to work out how she had contracted the sexually transmitted infection (STI). During an appearance on 'The Drew Barrymore Show', Halle explained: "I tried to go to the bathroom and I couldn’t go. It was so painful when I tried to let a little bit out. I couldn’t go. It took me almost 10 minutes just to empty my bladder because it was so painful. "Substances were down there that I had never seen before. And I thought, ‘What is this?’” After seeing a doctor, she was diagnosed with a "really bad case of herpes", and Halle added: "We spend the next 72 hours doing the blame game, trying to figure out who gave it to me, who gave it to him. And then a couple of hours after that, my doctor called me and said, ‘You do not have herpes'." Halle went on to do some research and discovered her symptoms were linked to perimenopause - which hits prior to menopause.

'I don't see 25% sticking': BMO chief investment officer on Trump's tariff plan
U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to hit Canada with an up to 25 per cent trade tariff on Feb. 1 boils down to a classic dealmaking tactic, according to the chief investment officer of one of Canada’s largest lenders. Bank of Montreal’s Sadiq Adatia predicts tariffs at that level are unlikely to last long, if they’re imposed at all.
